The Grange

Like many families, the four Baring siblings (pictured to the left)—Zam, Rose, Mark and Lucy—each went off to build successful careers of their own: Zam worked in television production, Rose has long steered an acclaimed independent publishing house; Mark, the 8th Baron Ashburton, oversees The Grange Estate and its celebrated summer opera festival while working in finance; and Lucy founded Vaughan, a leading name in high-end lighting design.

By 2011, the siblings were ready to create a project that would allow them to work together, celebrate their heritage, and ensure that future generations could remain connected to one another and to the land that had been in their family for over 200 years. Sparkling wine fit the bill—something beautiful, enduring, and rooted in place.

As Zam joked in an interview with The World of Fine Wine, “I can do media, Mark can do money, Rose and Lucy get out selling. The only thing we lack is any experience of wine.” So the youngest sibling set off to Plumpton College to study viticulture and oenology, laying the foundation for what would become The Grange Hampshire.

The first vines were planted on the rolling slopes above the River Itchen, where thick chalk soils and a cool Hampshire climate provide the perfect conditions for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Today, Zam runs the estate day to day, ensuring the siblings’ shared vision is carried forward in every detail.

In recent years, The Grange has taken another step forward: building a winery on the estate and bringing winemaking fully in-house under the guidance of Harry Pickering.

For the Barings, celebrating the land also means caring for it—the winery runs entirely on regenerative solar power, and rainwater collected from the roof is stored in tanks and reused throughout the winemaking process.

Their wines have already earned international recognition, with a Decanter Platinum Medal in 2020 and a streak of back-to-back International Wine Competition (IWC) Gold Medals in 2023, 2024 and 2025. But at its heart, The Grange is exactly what it set out to be: siblings reunited, a family’s heritage renewed, and wines that reflect both the elegance of their chalk terroir and a vision carried forward for generations to come.
